It's National Safeguarding Adults Week this week, 17 – 21 November 2025.

National Safeguarding Adults Week aims to raise awareness of important issues relating to the abuse or neglect of adults with care and support needs.

Types of abuse

  • Physical abuse: Someone hurts your body. They might hit, push, or cause pain.

  • Sexual abuse: Someone touches you or makes you do sexual things you do not want.

  • Psychological abuse: Someone is unkind with words. They may shout, bully, scare you, or try to control you.

  • Financial abuse: Someone takes your money or things. Someone may make you sign papers you do not understand.

  • Neglect: You do not get the care or support you need. Your basic needs are not met.

  • Discriminatory abuse: Someone treats you badly because of your race, disability, age, or gender.

  • Domestic abuse: Someone in your family or household hurts you, scares you, or controls you.

  • Organisational abuse: Poor or unsafe care in a place like a care home, hospital, or supported living.

  • Self-neglect: You find it hard to look after yourself. You may not wash, eat, or keep your home safe.
