On 14th March 2025, Healthwatch Portsmouth and Healthwatch Hampshire visited the emergency department at Queen Alexandra Hospital.

We observed patient experience, reviewed accessibility and communication, and identified practical improvements.

After our visit, we have submitted our recommendations to Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust (PHUT). PHUT replied with actions taken, work underway, and areas for further review.

As a result, our recommendations have contributed to several practical improvements, particularly in the areas below.

  • Signage clarity

  • Clarity in the use of digital display screens

  • Staff role identification

  • Discharge processes

  • Access to services for patients with communication and accessible information needs
