Your spotlight on local services

Rachel - Maternity Services in Hampshire

Hi, I’m Rachel and I’ve been working for Healthwatch Hampshire since June 2016.

In September 2017 Wessex Voices and Healthwatch Hampshire were commissioned to carry out engagement work and gather feedback from parents with a baby under one year old, in order to better understand how services can be improved. I have been working closely with The Local Maternity Systems for Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth (SHIP) to devise a plan of action. The project’s aim is to improve outcomes for mothers and babies across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, by gain feedback from new parents on their recent experiences from the first booking appointment with a midwife through to the first 10 days after birth.

This involved me travelling around the region in my little red car, with a boot filled with leaflets, banners, surveys and information to promote the project and encourage people to complete the survey. In total I visited 9 Child Health Development Clinics including Bordon, Petersfiled, Basingstoke, Andover, Waterlooville, Portsmouth and more in between. My powers of persuasion must be better than I thought as we got over 1000 surveys completed! But I can’t take all the credit as there is no doubt that using social media and partners to promote worked wonders.

Only last week we presented our draft report with 9 recommendations to the SHIP working group, and will be publishing the full report in January... Watch this space!
